University of Maine and AYCC Launch Statewide STEAM Education Initiative for Youth in Maine

In a bold step toward transforming youth development in Maine, the University of Maine and the Alfond Youth & Community Center (AYCC) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 29, 2025, to officially launch a statewide STEAM education initiative. The agreement sets the foundation for an ambitious, multi-year plan to engage youth across the state in hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) learning opportunities.

A Future-Ready Model for After School STEAM Learning

At the heart of this initiative is the Mary Frances McCarthy Discovery Center, a dynamic educational space embedded within the Burger-Roy After School Program at the AYCC in Waterville. This center will serve as the first site of a scalable model for after school STEAM Program Development Team (SPDT) and will expand statewide through a phased strategy  over the next 10 years.

“This is more than a partnership; it’s a shared commitment to building a future-ready generation through collaborative innovation,” said Ken Walsh, CEO of the AYCC.

Key Program Features

  • Student Internships & Practicums in counseling, early childhood, and physical education
  • Joint Research and Grant Development in youth development
  • Professional Development for AYCC staff in trauma-informed care and child psychology
  • Financial Literacy Workshops by the Maine Business School
  • Mentorship & Service Learning led by UMaine students
  • Career Exploration and Volunteer Events for high school youth

Why This Matters in Maine

With many rural and underserved communities in Maine lacking consistent access to high-quality STEAM programs, this initiative fills a critical gap. By leveraging university expertise, community engagement, and educational innovation, this partnership aims to build sustainable, equitable access to education and career readiness.

The MOU also reinforces the University of Maine’s commitment to workforce development, placing students in real-world learning environments while directly impacting local communities.
