MMD Swimmers Crush Records at Eastern Zone Championships
Buffalo, NY – Maine was on the map in a big way this past weekend as two swimmers from the Mid-Maine Dolphins Swim Team (MMD) made history at the 2025 Eastern Zone Long Course Senior Championships, August 7-10 at Erie Community College.
Competing against 280 athletes from 70 teams across the Eastern U.S., Gabrielle Roy of Lewiston, and Caden LaPlante of Fairfield didn’t just hold their own; they rewrote the record books.
Roy, who raced in four finals and three time trials, broke five MMD team records and posted some of the fastest swims Maine has ever seen. Her 50-freestyle time of 27.79 seconds wasn’t just a personal best; it’s now the fastest time in the state this season and ranks 11th all-time in Maine history.
LaPlante, competing in an open age group as a 14-year-old, had a weekend to remember. He also broke five MMD team records, but went even further, adding four new Maine state records and a meet record to his name. His 50-butterfly time of 25.65 seconds is now the fastest 13-14 time in the entire country. In the 100-butterfly, he erased a state record set in 1997 by Olympian Ian Crocker, climbing to 4th in the nation for his age group.
In all, the Mid-Maine Dolphins were the only team from Maine at the meet, finishing 26th overall. “For two swimmers to put up results like this at such a high-level competition says a lot about their talent, their work ethic, and their future in the sport,” said Matt Reed, MMD Head Coach.
With their latest performances, Roy and LaPlante have not only cemented their spots in Maine swimming history; they’ve shown that even a small team from Maine can make a big splash on the national stage.
