Yesterday, community members, local leaders, and project partners gathered at the Alfond Municipal Pool Complex to celebrate an exciting milestone: the official ribbon cutting for the newly installed solar panels
The event brought together representatives from the City of Waterville, Alfond Youth & Community Center, and the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, along with partners from SunDog Solar and other community leaders, all recognizing the impact of this forward-thinking investment.
A Smart, Sustainable Upgrade
Thanks to grant funding secured through the Governor’s Office, the solar installation came at no direct cost to local taxpayers. The system is expected to reduce the pool complex’s electricity use by approximately 40% during the peak summer season, when energy demand is highest.
These savings will help stabilize operating costs and allow more resources to be reinvested into programs and services that benefit the community.
A Community Asset, Powered by Partnership
The Alfond Municipal Pool Complex (AMPC) is a true example of collaboration in action. The facility is operated by the Alfond Youth & Community Center through a community partnership with the City of Waterville, while the pool itself is owned and maintained by the City of Waterville’s Parks & Recreation Department.
Last summer, the AMPC welcomed over 20,000 residents and visitors during the 2025 season, offering recreation, learning, and connection. From swim lessons, and open swimming to the splash pad for little ones; and new this year, a large inflatable obstacle course; the complex continues to evolve to meet the needs of the community. With the addition of solar energy, it now also stands as a visible symbol of innovation and environmental responsibility. The ribbon cutting itself was provided by the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce and generously sponsored by Pye-Barker and Summit Natural Gas, highlighting strong community support behind this milestone.
Leading by Example
Beyond the immediate cost savings, the new solar system reduces the facility’s carbon footprint and demonstrates how municipalities can adopt renewable energy solutions in practical, and impactful ways.
Projects like this not only improve infrastructure, they inspire broarder community adoption of clean energy and reinforce Waterville’s committment to a more sustainable future.
Looking Ahead
The ribbon cutting marks more than the completion of a project, it represents a long-term investment in efficiency, sustainability, and community well-being.
As we look ahead to another busy season at the pool, we’re proud to take this step toward reducing costs, conserving energy, and continuing to provide a high-quality experience for all who visit.
The Alfond Municipal Pool Complex kicks off it’s 2026 season on Saturday, June 13. Learn about our hours, season passes, admissions, and more, by visiting our webpage.
